The debate on whether governmental bodies should increase fuel costs as a means of addressing the global environmental crisis has been going on rather fiercely for a while. Personally, I am of the opinion that this is not a fundamentally holistic solution and should not be implemented, as the world economy can be disastrously harmed.
Admittedly, by raising the cost of fuel, people are encouraged to use petrol and diesel more rationally, thus diminishing the emission of harmful contaminants into the atmosphere. On the surface, the practice directly tackles the global warming situation, as it is mainly caused by the vast amount of carbon dioxide and CFCs released into the air. However, the concept fails to take into account the fact that emission is not the sole factor to blame for environmental degradation worldwide.
To further discuss the aforementioned viewpoint, I would argue that gasoline consumption is the primary factor in only a few environmental issues, namely global warming. Other problems, such as overfishing and deforestation are not associated with fuel overconsumption in any way. As a matter of fact, it is suggested that other solutions can mitigate the severity of environmental deterioration in general, such as ecological campaigns that advocate for the use of environmentally-friendly technology which notably consists of solar power and electric vehicles. Another remedy to this problem is to enforce stringent policies regarding the overexploitation of natural resources, both organic and inorganic. The practice will undoubtedly put a stop to deforestation and numerous other environmental crises.
In conclusion, while some people may advocate for the notion that fuel consumption is necessary in order to ease the global ecological degradation front, I firmly believe that other ideas must be considered before such an inferior policy is implemented.
