Some people say that computer games are bad for children by all means, others believe that these games are contributing to children’s development. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Band 8.0 model essay:
People have differing views on whether it is beneficial for children to favor video games over sports and other active activities. Personally, I am of the opinion that neither type of entertainment should be undervalued and it is necessary for children to balance their free time activities.
Researches have shown that a sedentary lifestyle can be observed more commonly among the young population. While a vast number of reasons can be pointed towards this issue, it is evident that video games are one of the main contributing factors. The implication of this is the higher risk of health problems, ranging from obesity to diabetes and cardiac arrests. In addition, by isolating oneself in a virtual world, one has a higher chance of becoming an introverted person, resulting in loss of communication skills and difficulties in socializing. Another point to make is that game addiction may lead to poor academic performance, isolation or even mental health illnesses such as depression which requires special treatments. All of the effects above prove to be detrimental for a growing child.
The opposing side argues that games on computers enhance and trigger curiosity and imagination among children, as they are highly interactive and intriguing. This is indeed correct, as a number of games nowadays are built to serve the purpose of expanding the minds of young children via puzzles or other brain-training activities. Furthermore, games also have an undeniable recreational value, due to the fact that children can ultimately relax and entertain themselves during gaming sessions.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that parents and children must work together to organize a beneficial and healthy entertainment schedule in order to achieve maximum relaxation while eliminating the risk of issues that may occur.
