IELTS: Preservation of cultural traditions

Some people say cultural traditions are destroyed when they are used as money-making attractions aimed at tourists. Others say this is the only way to save such traditions. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Sample essay band 7.5:

The debate on whether we should commercialize our distinctive cultural traditions has been going on rather fiercely, with one side arguing that it will lead to the eventual destruction of these traditions, while the other believes that it is the only way for us to keep our cultural features afloat. Personally, I am of the opinion that cultural values should be utilized for both financial gain and preservation purposes.

Evidently, by commercializing traditions, the mass arrival of fluxes of tourists may severely damage a historical site’s condition. For instance, the Buddha statue in Son Tra peninsula is covered by signatures of many tourists, thus causing serious or even irreparable damages, Furthermore, rapid touristic development fo an unprepared area may cause catastrophic cataclysm to the local natural habitat and environment, such as in the cases of various beaches in Vietnam.

On the other hand, by encouraging the commercialization of cultural traditions, more financial aid will be available for the reinvestment of the preservation and restoration process of these historical heritages. As a matter of fact, the governmental budget for the maintenance of historical monuments in many nations is severely underfunded. Furthermore, cultural exchange will be accelerated with the aid of our diversified cultural base. Therefore, it is clear that the commercialization of traditional cultures will immensely help the development of our society, both culturally and economically.

In conclusion, I believe all possible measures must be surveyed carefully before any decision is made.
